Here's what Shan, Youth Club Manager, had to say about the project:
"The project is great initiative and the challenge of trying to achieve the final goal keeps driving you on. It gives the young people the drive to succeed but also enjoy the fruits of their own work."
Newark Youth Club started working with VIY in mid-October 2012, with the project being completed in December. Renovation of the entire building was undertaken, including the re-decoration of all communal rooms, removal and replacement of carpets with laminate flooring and the fixing/ replacement of all locks on doors.
The effect of the VIY project on those young people who took part has been extremely positive. One group of participants has since been inspired to set up their own social enterprise, offering basic painting and decorating services to those in their local community, whilst others are now peer-mentoring members of another participating VIY club, Adelina Grove, carrying on the true spirit of VIY!
'On Monday night I visited Newark Youth. An impressive sight was a 13-year old explaining to me the different techniques of tiling and of laying flooring. He has ten brothers and sisters and his new DIY skills have made a huge difference to his parents. He has also achieved four accredited units from City & Guilds. The pride he now takes in his youth club and the stronger bond between the young people who've taken part is terrific to see.'
- Rosie Ferguson, Chief Executive at London Youth (November 2012)
'Can I take this opportunity to thank VIY for the wonderful opportunity for our club. It has definitely been the most innovative project I've been involved with in my career as youth worker.'
- Shan Miah, Club Manager (December 2012)
