On 13th June 2013 Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, visited Hall Green boxing club!

Commenting on VIY, Tom Chaney, Hall Green Boxing Club Manager, said: “We're delighted to be one of the youth clubs taking part. Our toilets, showers and changing rooms have been run down for years and are in desperate need of repair. Fixing them is a great opportunity for our young people to give something back to the gym and for the whole club and its members to benefit, and the VIY participants are taking great pride in the work they're doing. The fact that they can gain a vocational City & Guilds qualification down at the gym, under the guidance of professional tradespeople, is a big draw for the young people.”

A Hall Green Boxing Club member said "I come to the club almost every day and I wanted to do this project because it helps the club but also gives me a qualification. It feels like real work and different to trying to learn something at school or college.”

Lead skills mentor and local tradesman Hermes added: "We’re really keen to do what we can to give something to these young people. They like to work and I think they're good at it. This is a great way to show them what building work is all about and how it might be for them."

VIY activity at the club

Work at Hall Green Boxing Club started in May and is focused on renovating the shower room.
