Here's what Shan, Youth club manager had to say about the project:

"The project has helped by fast tracking the renovation of a neglected space that was partly used as a meeting space and storage rooms into a youth club and community space which otherwise could have taken a very long time. It also enables us to engage young people into more positive activities on a regular basis. Most importantly by participating in the VIY project the young people now have ownership of the space and feel a better part of their community and they have even accreditation's to prove it."

"The project is great initiative and the challenge of trying to achieve the final goal keeps driving you on. It gives the young people the drive to succeed but also allows them to enjoy the fruits of their own work."

VIY activity at the club

Adelina Grove started working with VIY in December 2012, with the project being completed in February 2013. The idea for the project was initially brought to the attention of Newark Youth by the local community and involves the repurposing of a storage room in the housing estate into a community activity centre. The work carried out included the building of a new kitchen, re-flooring and re-decoration of the entire premises.

The impact of the VIY project on the young participants is clear to see. Since completion of the project, one VIY participant has taken up an apprenticeship with Carillion, a leading construction and support services company, and another has applied to join Carillion after leaving school in the Summer.

Here's what Shanur had to say about the project: "It allowed us to engage young people in more positive activities on a regular basis and by participating in the VIY project the young people now have ownership of the space, feel a better part of their community and have gained accreditation's too. The project is a great initiative and the challenge of trying to achieve the final goal keeps driving you on. It gives the young people the drive to succeed but also enjoy the fruits of their own work".
